I think a better alternative ability would be for the Dwarf Engineer to be able to cause cave-ins to block monsters, as well as clear away cave-ins (probably taking multiple turns to do either). Or maybe would roll the monster's mind stat to see if it notices the trap. I think it would require a very impartial Zargon who is willing to walk monsters into traps that they supposedly are unaware of. Really didn't think through how this would actually work.
